Hello, Im 19 Years old and Been Highly Interested in figuring out a carrer in my life. One thing I have always had interest in was railroads since a little boy. I live In york PA Which Is About 30 Minutes South Of Harrisburg. I know this is probly not the greatest locations for a rail job considering there is not many huge rail yards around, But i would be willing to travel. I have my G.E.D. And am ready for a hard working job that I can benifit from. I have been looking at rail websites for months now and have watched plenty of recruitment videos. It seems like work I would be able to do, and do well, and enjoy for the rest of my life. If anyone has any information that could possibly help me in my quest please do not hesitate to EMAIL me at sum747@aol.com . Thanks all! Have a nice day! - DJ Abbott

Well there arent many options right now. I do know that Genessee and Wyoming owns York Rail which is in your hometown. That is a shortline railroad, of course i wouldnt expect they are looking for people now. One thing that is common with shortlines is they dont advertise job openings, so just turn in a resume and keep your fingers crossed. Another thing available now is working on track repair. Go to railjobs.com and look for rumer fritz cooke track repair company. they are hiring right now and are out of columbus, ohio. there other track companies that are probably closer to you. I did apply to work with the state owned railroads in WV. Thats not too far from you, i think monster.com or myspace jobs was advertising that postion. just look up railroad jobs for wv when you do a search. the job is called railroad technician. Other shortlines near you are the Maryland Midland railroad and the Winchester and Western railroad.

The time is all wrong right now, they just furlouhged more guys system wide on the BNSF, I have 6 short years under my belt, and have to check the computer every couple days to see how low on the "extra"board I get, can't even hold a regular job for more than someone elses vacation. Try the Short Lines for now, and keep your eye on the big ones "Career info" on their websites.
